The Jazz Wizard Jr. books explain every possible step involved in learning to improvise. In this sample from Lesson 3 of Jazz Fiddle Wizard Jr., students are shown how to improvise on a G major scale by changing directions in the middle of the scale, adding rhythms and repeated notes, and skipping scale tones. The students imitate the violin on the companion CD that in this instance plays the written part of each exercise. Then the students start improvising using the principles demonstrated as the rhythm track continues:
